Reflexology is a gentle form of bodywork based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands and outer ears which correspond to all parts of the body and each body system. Reflexology offers a holistic approach to wellness. Applying pressure to the reflex points of the feet, hands and ears creates a stimulus at the nerve endings and reduces tension in other areas of the body through the nerve pathways. Breaking down tension in the body eliminates toxins, reduces pain and allows the body to heal itself.
In each session the intention is to treat the whole person. By following the reflexology maps on the feet, hands and ears each body part and body system can be accessed creating a systemic response and overall relaxation. Releasing congestion or stress in the nervous system can help to restore and balance the body's energy.
Reflexology works powerfully to decrease stress, increase circulation and soothe the nervous system. Research has shown reflexology to be beneficial in reducing symptoms related to headaches, asthma, cancer treatment, premenstrual syndrome, depression, anxiety, and both acute and chronic pain.
Pressure techniques, stretching and movement of the feet during a reflexology session can also correct imbalances through over or under-stimulation of the reflexes, enabling natural reflexology to take place. There will be a special emphasis on self-care and learning reflexology techniques that you can include between sessions for even longer lasting results.
your reflexology session - what to expect
During a reflexology appointment you'll remain fully clothed and simply remove your shoes and socks during the session. Integrated foot, hand and ear reflexology will be used in most sessions due to it's effectiveness. At times one or two (rather than all three) areas may be emphasized, or even necessary in the case of injury or other contraindication. Increasing relaxation and flow in the energy of the feet, hands and ears interrupts the stress level in the body and resets homeostasis activating the body's innate healing ability. Reflexology complements other medical care and is not used to diagnose or cure health conditions but is highly effective in supporting your health.
When receiving reflexology a deep relaxation response is common and many people experience even deeper relaxation after a few sessions. A specific pressure technique is used to stimulate the reflexes on the feet, hands and outer ears; while the technique shouldn't be painful you may feel tenderness is some areas. I'll work within your pain tolerance, adjusting the pressure as needed, and allowing the tenderness to subside in response to a longer hold on some reflexes.
Between sessions I'll encourage you to incorporate and maintain self-care. I can offer instruction on how to do some reflexology on yourself, discuss other forms of self-care and offer referrals to expand your support team as needed.
